Pattern

  • 〈noun〉も … too
  • A も B も both A and B

What it does

も adds "too": わたしも いきます (I'll go too). It shows the same thing is true for this item as well.

It replaces は and を

Don't stack particles: say パンも たべます (eat bread too), not ×パンをも. も takes the place of は / を.

"Not … either"

With a negative, も means "not … either": コーヒーも のみません (I don't drink coffee either).

Examples

  • わたしも がくせいです。

    Watashi mo gakusei desu.

    I'm a student too.

  • パンも たべます。

    Pan mo tabemasu.

    I eat bread too.

    も replaces を here.

  • にくも さかなも たべません。

    Niku mo sakana mo tabemasen.

I eat neither meat nor fish.

Common mistakes

  • も replaces は and を — don't say ×をも or ×はも.
  • With particles like に / で / へ, も comes after them: にほんへも いきました (went to Japan too).
