なる (naru)
~になる — “to become ~”
In short · A verb for a change of state or status. After a noun or な-adjective use に; after an い-adjective use く; then add なる.
Pattern
-
名詞・な形容詞+に+なるnoun / な-adjective + に + なる -
い形容詞(−い)+く+なるい-adjective (−い) + く + なる
How to form it
The form depends on the word type: 先生になる (noun), 静かになる (な-adjective), 暖かくなる (い-adjective).
Natural change
As in 春になると暖かくなります, it describes something that changes with time rather than by someone’s action.
Jobs and roles
It also covers a change in job or position: 兄は先生になりました.
Examples
-
春(はる)になると暖(あたた)かくなります。
Haru ni naru to atatakaku narimasu.
When spring comes, it gets warm.
-
兄(あに)は先生(せんせい)になりました。
Ani wa sensei ni narimashita.
My older brother became a teacher.
-
夜(よる)になると寒(さむ)くなります。
Yoru ni naru to samuku narimasu.
When night comes, it gets cold.
Common mistakes
- Do not use に after an い-adjective (not 暖かいになる). Say 暖かくなる.
- When someone causes the change, use する (部屋をきれいにする).
