Pattern

  • 動詞辞書形/ている形/ない形+うちに while doing ~ / while still ~
  • い形容詞/な形容詞(な)+うちに while it is still ~ (hot, bright, etc.)
  • 名詞+の+うちに within the period of ~

Do it before it changes

The state in front of うちに (hot, light, in Japan) will not last. So the sentence carries the feeling “do it now, because later it will be too late.” 熱いうちに食べる means to eat it before it cools.

Connection

Verb: 日本にいるうちに. い-adjective: 明るいうちに. な-adjective: 元気なうちに. Noun: 若いうちに or 休みのうちに (noun + の). The main clause is an action by the speaker, often with ~てください, ~たい or ~ましょう.

Difference from 間に

~間に just says “during”. ~うちに adds the idea that the situation will change later, so you should act now. It can also mean something changes gradually while you keep doing an action (話しているうちに分かってきた).

Examples

  • 熱(あつ)いうちに、召(め)し上(あ)がってください。

    Atsui uchi ni, meshiagatte kudasai.

Please eat it while it’s hot.

Hot food will cool down, so now is the time. 召し上がる is the honorific for 食べる.

  • 明(あか)るいうちに、家(いえ)に帰(かえ)りましょう。

Akarui uchi ni, ie ni kaerimashou.

Let’s go home while it’s still light out.

  • 日本(にほん)にいるうちに、富士山(ふじさん)に登(のぼ)ってみたい。

Nihon ni iru uchi ni, Fujisan ni nobotte mitai.

While I’m in Japan, I want to try climbing Mt. Fuji.

Common mistakes

  • Do not use it for a state that will not change. It needs a situation that can end (hot, light, staying in Japan).
  • な-adjectives and nouns need な / の: 元気なうちに, 休みのうちに. Not 元気うちに.
