Pattern

  • 名詞 + を + なさる(なさいます) 散歩をなさる / 何をなさいますか
  • する動詞の名詞 + なさる 出発する → 出発なさる (also お/ご + noun + なさる)

Where it comes from

It is the honorific form of する. The ます form is irregular: なさいます, not なさります. For verbs ending in する, such as 勉強する, replace する with なさる (勉強なさる).

When to use it

Use it for the actions of superiors and customers: 社長は何をなさいますか, 先生は毎朝散歩をなさいます, お客様はもう出発なさいました.

Things to watch

Because it raises someone else, do not use it for yourself or your side. For your own actions, use the humble いたします. It looks like the command ~なさい but is a separate use.

Examples

  • 社長(しゃちょう)は何(なに)をなさいますか。

Shachō wa nani o nasaimasu ka.

    What will the president do?

  • 先生(せんせい)は毎朝(まいあさ)散歩(さんぽ)をなさいます。

Sensei wa maiasa sanpo o nasaimasu.

The teacher takes a walk every morning.

  • お客(きゃく)様(さま)はもう出発(しゅっぱつ)なさいました。

    Okyaku-sama wa mō shuppatsu nasaimashita.

    The guest has already departed.

Common mistakes

  • Never use it for your own actions. 私が案内なさいます is wrong; say 案内いたします.
  • The ます form is なさいます, not なさります.
