Pattern

  • 名詞(する動詞)+ いたします 案内する → 案内いたします
  • お/ご + 動詞ます形語幹・名詞 + いたします お持ちいたします / ご連絡いたします

Where it comes from

いたす is the humble verb for する, and with ます it becomes いたします. Lowering your own action shows respect to the other person.

When to use it

It is common in customer service and business: 私が案内いたします, ご連絡いたします. For an action you do for the other person, the お/ご~いたします form is even more modest (お荷物をお持ちいたします).

Things to watch

It is only for your own actions, never for the other person's. For their actions, use なさいます. It also has no request form, so ask for things with a different expression.

Examples

  • 私(わたし)が会場(かいじょう)を案内(あんない)いたします。

Watashi ga kaijō o annai itashimasu.

I will show you around the venue.

  • お荷物(にもつ)は私(わたし)がお持(も)ちいたします。

Onimotsu wa watashi ga o-mochi itashimasu.

    I will carry your luggage.

    お + ます-stem + いたします.

  • 後(のち)ほど、ご連絡(れんらく)いたします。

    Nochihodo, go-renraku itashimasu.

    I will contact you later.

    ご + noun + いたします.

Common mistakes

  • Never use it for the other person's actions. 先生がご説明いたします is wrong; say 先生がご説明になります or なさいます.
  • It sounds unnatural with friends and family; use します there.
