Pattern

  • 〜い + N a [adj] N (おおきい いえ)
  • 〜い です / 〜く ない です / 〜かった です is / is not / was [adj]

Describing a noun

Put the い-adjective straight before the noun: おおきい いえ (a big house), たかい やま (a tall mountain).

Negative and past

Change the い itself: おおきい → おおきく ない (not big) → おおきかった (was big). Add です to stay polite.

です doesn't change

With い-adjectives, です only adds politeness and never becomes でした. The past lives in the adjective: たかかったです, not ×たかいでした.

Examples

  • この やまは たかいです。

    Kono yama wa takai desu.

    This mountain is tall.

  • この ほんは おもしろく ないです。

Kono hon wa omoshiroku nai desu.

    This book isn't interesting.

Negative is 〜く ない; です just adds politeness.

  • えいがは たのしかったです。

    Eiga wa tanoshikatta desu.

    The movie was fun.

The past 〜かった is in the adjective; です stays.

Common mistakes

  • Don't put の between an い-adjective and its noun: おおきい いえ, not ×おおきいの いえ.
  • いい (good) is irregular: negative よく ない, past よかった — not ×いくない / ×いかった.
