Pattern

  • V-た did V (plain past)
have done V (before)

What it does

た is the casual past: たべる → たべた (ate), のむ → のんだ (drank). It matches the polite ました.

Same shape as the て-form

If you know the て-form, just swap て→た and で→だ: かいて → かいた, のんで → のんだ.

Talking about experience

(I have been to Japan).

Examples

    Kinō eiga o mita.

    I watched a movie yesterday.

    Mō gohan o tabeta.

    I already ate.

Nihon e itta koto ga arimasu.

    I have been to Japan.

Common mistakes

  • た follows the same group changes as て (のむ→のんだ), not ×のみた.
  • た is casual. In polite speech use ました (たべました), not plain た.
