ところ (tokoro)

~ところだ — about to ~, just on the verge of ~

In short · Shows that an action is just about to begin: “I am just about to ~.” It attaches to the dictionary form of a verb. ところ here means a point in time, and it is often used with これから, ちょうど or 今から.

Pattern

  • 動詞辞書形 + ところだ/ところです dictionary form + ところだ (just about to do)
  • 動詞辞書形 + ところだった/ところでした past form: was just about to (but may not have)

Moment before the action

Verb + ところだ describes the instant before the action starts. これから出かけるところです means that you have not left yet but are about to. ちょうど or 今から make the timing clearer.

Three stages with ところ

The same word shows other stages by changing the verb form: 食べるところ (about to eat), 食べているところ (in the middle of eating), 食べたところ (has just eaten). This lesson covers the first.

Examples

  • これから出(で)かけるところです。

    Korekara dekakeru tokoro desu.

I'm just about to go out now.

  • ちょうど電車(でんしゃ)に乗(の)るところでした。

Chōdo densha ni noru tokoro deshita.

I was just about to get on the train.

  • 今(いま)から昼(ひる)ご飯(はん)を食(た)べるところです。

Ima kara hirugohan o taberu tokoro desu.

I'm just about to eat lunch now.

Common mistakes

  • Use the dictionary form for “about to”. ~ているところ means “in the middle of” and ~たところ means “just did”.
  • ところ is a point in time here, not a place.
