Pattern

  • さっき+過去形 さっき + past tense (さっき電話があった)
  • さっきまで+〜ていた さっきまで + ~ていた (until a moment ago)

Meaning

さっき refers to a moment just before now. Unlike 昨日 or 先週, it is not a fixed point but a feeling of “just a bit ago”.

How it is used

It is normally used in past-tense sentences. さっきまで shows a state that continued until a moment ago and is different now. In polite or business situations use 先ほど.

Examples

  • さっき田中(たなか)さんから電話(でんわ)がありました。

Sakki Tanaka-san kara denwa ga arimashita.

There was a call from Mr. Tanaka just now.

  • さっき食(た)べたばかりなのに、もうお腹(なか)がすいた。

Sakki tabeta bakari na noni, mō onaka ga suita.

  • さっきまで晴(は)れていたのに、急(きゅう)に雨(あめ)が降(ふ)ってきた。

Sakki made harete ita noni, kyū ni ame ga futte kita.

It was sunny until a little while ago, but it suddenly started to rain.

Common mistakes

  • Do not use it for the future (× さっき行きます).
  • Use 先ほど with superiors or in business.
