Pattern

  • 時刻・日付 + ごろ 三時ごろ / 十月ごろ / 昨日ごろ
  • 名詞・動詞の普通形 + ころ 子どものころ / 高校のころ / 若かったころ

Where it comes from

The same kanji 頃 is read ごろ (voiced) after a point in time and ころ after a period. It attaches to a noun with の, or to the plain form of a verb or adjective (若かったころ).

When to use it

Use 三時ごろ to say roughly when to meet, and 子どものころ to recall the past. ごろ does not go with a length of time (such as 〜時間).

Difference from similar words

ぐらい/くらい is for amounts and lengths of time, while ごろ is for points in time (三時ごろ, but 三時間ぐらい). ~のころ often refers to a habit or state that continued during that period.

Examples

  • 子(こ)どもの頃(ころ)、よくここで遊(あそ)びました。

Kodomo no koro, yoku koko de asobimashita.

When I was a child, I often played here.

  • 高校(こうこう)の頃(ころ)、毎日(まいにち)走(はし)っていた。

Kōkō no koro, mainichi hashitte ita.

When I was in high school, I ran every day.

  • 三時(さんじ)頃(ごろ)に駅(えき)で会(あ)いましょう。

Sanji goro ni eki de aimashō.

Let's meet at the station around three o'clock.

After a clock time, 頃 is read ごろ.

Common mistakes

  • Mind the reading: ごろ after clock times and dates, ころ after a period.
  • 三時間ごろ is wrong. For a length of time, say 三時間ぐらい.
