Pattern

  • 動詞た形+ほうがいい verb ta-form + ほうがいい
  • 動詞ない形+ほうがいい verb nai-form + ほうがいい (to advise against)

How to use it

It recommends one choice over the others. 薬を飲んだほうがいいです recommends taking the medicine.

Negative form

To advise against something, use the nai-form (夜は食べないほうがいいです). Do not use なかったほうがいい here.

Strength

It is clear advice, so it can feel pushy toward a superior. In that case use softer forms such as 〜といいですよ.

Examples

  • 早(はや)く寝(ね)たほうがいいです。

Hayaku neta hō ga ii desu.

You had better go to bed early.

  • 薬(くすり)を飲(の)んだほうがいいです。

    You had better take medicine.

  • 野菜(やさい)を食(た)べたほうがいいです。

Common mistakes

  • For positive advice use the ta-form. The dictionary form is mainly for comparisons.
  • The negative is ないほうがいい, not なかったほうがいい.
