Pattern

  • 動詞て形+ください te-form + ください (書いてください)
  • 動詞ない形+ないでください negative: ない-form + でください (書かないでください)

Connection

Change the verb to the て-form and add ください: 書く → 書いて → 書いてください, 開ける → 開けて → 開けてください, 話す → 話して → 話してください.

When to use it

Use it for requests and for instructions such as in a classroom or on a sign. It is not rude, but it can sound like a direct instruction to a superior. For a softer feel, add すみませんが or use ~てくださいませんか.

To say ‘please don’t’

Use the ない-form plus でください: 書かないでください (Please don't write). Adverbs like ゆっくり can go before the verb: ゆっくり話してください.

Examples

  • ここに名前(なまえ)を書(か)いてください。

Koko ni namae o kaite kudasai.

    Please write your name here.

書く → 書いて (く becomes いて).

  • 窓(まど)を開(あ)けてください。

    Mado o akete kudasai.

    Please open the window.

    開ける → 開けて.

  • ゆっくり話(はな)してください。

    Yukkuri hanashite kudasai.

    Please speak slowly.

A very useful phrase for learners.

Common mistakes

  • Use the て-form (書いてください), not the ます form or dictionary form.
  • For ‘please don't ~’ use ~ないでください, not ~てください with a negative.
