のが好(す)き (no ga suki)
~のが好きだ — liking to do something
Pattern
-
動詞辞書形+のが好きだdictionary form + のが好きだ (読むのが好き) -
名詞+が好きだnoun + が好きだ (音楽が好き)
Structure
Dictionary form + の + が好きです: 本を読むのが好きです. The object stays inside the verb phrase (本を), and the whole phrase is marked with が.
Why の is needed
好き takes a noun. の makes the action act like a noun, so you cannot say 読むが好き. Using こと instead (読むことが好き) is also possible and slightly more formal.
Other feelings
The same frame works with きらい (dislike), 上手, 下手, and 得意 (strong point): 泳ぐのがきらいです.
Examples
-
私(わたし)は本(ほん)を読(よ)むのが好(す)きです。

読む (dictionary form) + の.
-
私(わたし)は音楽(おんがく)を聞(き)くのが好(す)きです。
Watashi wa ongaku o kiku no ga suki desu.
I like listening to music.
Compare: 音楽が好きです (like music itself).
-
母(はは)は花(はな)を見(み)るのが好(す)きです。
Haha wa hana o miru no ga suki desu.

Works for other people too.
Common mistakes
- Don't drop の: say 読むのが好き, not 読むが好き.
- Use the dictionary form before の, not the ます form (読みますのが is wrong).
