Pattern

  • 動詞て形+から、〜 V te-form + から, next action (洗ってから食べる)

Structure

Change the first verb to the て-form and add から, then give the second action: 手を洗ってから、ご飯を食べます. The tense (present, past) is shown only by the last verb.

Nuance

てから stresses that the first action finishes before the second one begins, so the order matters. A plain て-form could just list actions; てから makes the order clear.

Same subject

Usually the same person does both actions. For a future habit or plan, the main verb stays in the present: 宿題をしてから遊びます.

Examples

  • 手(て)を洗(あら)ってから、ご飯(はん)を食(た)べます。

Te o aratte kara, gohan o tabemasu.

After washing my hands, I eat.

    洗う → 洗って + から.

  • 宿題(しゅくだい)をしてから遊(あそ)びます。

    Shukudai o shite kara asobimasu.

I play after doing my homework.

    Homework first, play second.

  • お風呂(ふろ)に入(はい)ってから寝(ね)ます。

    Ofuro ni haitte kara nemasu.

I sleep after taking a bath.

    入る → 入って + から.

Common mistakes

  • Use the て-form before から, not the ます form: 洗ってから, not 洗いますから (that means ‘because I wash’).
  • Only the last verb shows tense: 食べてから行きました, not 食べましてから行きました.
