Pattern

  • 動詞ます形の語幹+そうだ Verb stem + そうだ (降りそうだ / 壊れそうだ)
  • 形容詞の語幹+そうだ Adjective stem + そうだ (おいしそうだ)

How to make it

For i-adjectives drop い (おいしい → おいしそう); いい → よさそう and ない → なさそう. Verbs take the stem.

Cautions

It describes the speaker’s impression from looking, so it is not used for something you have already tasted. It does not attach to nouns or past facts. To pass on information heard, use the hearsay そうだ instead.

Common mistakes
