Pattern

  • 動詞・い形容詞の普通形 + かしら 晴れる → 晴れるかしら / 合う → 合うかしら
  • 名詞・な形容詞(だ を除く)+ かしら 本当かしら / 大丈夫かしら

Where it comes from

It combines the question か with しら, from 知らぬ (“do not know”). The sense is “I don't know whether ~.”

When to use it

Use it to say a question to yourself, almost like thinking aloud: 明日は晴れるかしら. It can also make an indirect request, as in ~てくれないかしら. Nouns and na-adjectives take no だ.

Things to watch

It is conversational and does not suit writing or formal speech. Men normally use かな for the same meaning, and かしら has a feminine feel.

Examples

  • 明日(あした)は晴(は)れるかしら。

    Ashita wa hareru kashira.

I wonder if it will be sunny tomorrow.

  • この服(ふく)、私(わたし)に合(あ)うかしら。

Kono fuku, watashi ni au kashira.

I wonder if these clothes suit me.

  • もう電車(でんしゃ)は行(い)ってしまったかしら。

Mō densha wa itte shimatta kashira.

I wonder if the train has already left.

Common mistakes

  • Do not put だ before it: 本当かしら, not 本当だかしら.
  • Men, writing and conversations with superiors normally use かな or でしょうか instead.
