Pattern

  • とても+形容詞 とても + adjective (とても寒い, とてもきれいだ)

Position

Put とても directly before the word it strengthens: とても寒いです, とてもおいしいです. It does not change the adjective's form. It works with both い- and な-adjectives.

Positive only

In a positive sentence とても means ‘very’. With a negative, it does not mean ‘not very’; use あまり~ない for that. A negative with とても is usually avoided at this level.

Other words for degree

There are casual or stronger words: すごく, 本当に, ちょっと (a little). In formal writing you may see 大変 or 非常に.

Examples

  • この料理(りょうり)はとてもおいしいです。

Kono ryōri wa totemo oishii desu.

    This dish is very delicious.

    Before an い-adjective.

  • 今日(きょう)はとても寒(さむ)いです。

    Kyō wa totemo samui desu.

    Today is very cold.

    とても goes right before 寒い.

  • この犬(いぬ)はとてもかわいいです。

Kono inu wa totemo kawaii desu.

    This dog is very cute.

Works the same with any adjective.

Common mistakes

  • Don't change the adjective: とても寒いです, not とても寒くです.
  • For ‘not very’, use あまり~ない, not とても with a negative.
