Pattern

  • ます形語幹+ます/ません present/future, affirmative and negative (行きます/行きません)
  • ます形語幹+ました/ませんでした past, affirmative and negative (見ました/見ませんでした)
  • ます形語幹+ましょう Let’s ~ (行きましょう)

Four endings

ます (do / will do), ません (does not), ました (did), ませんでした (did not). The same form is used for present and future; time words such as あした or きのう make the time clear.

Invitation

ましょう means “let’s ~” or “shall we?”: 行きましょう. It invites the listener to do something together or agrees to a suggestion.

Making the form

Take the stem (the part before ます) and add the ending: 行く → 行き + ます, 食べる → 食べ + ます. The tense is shown only by the ending, so the form of the verb before it does not change.

Examples

  • きのう 映画(えいが)を 見(み)ました。

    Kinou eiga o mimashita.

    I watched a movie yesterday.

    ました shows the past.

  • あした図書館(としょかん)へ行(い)きます。

    Ashita toshokan e ikimasu.

I will go to the library tomorrow.

ます is also used for the future, with あした.

  • 先週(せんしゅう)、友(とも)だちに会(あ)いました。

    Senshuu, tomodachi ni aimashita.

Last week, I met a friend.

Common mistakes

  • Past negative is ませんでした, not ありません or ましたん.
  • Present and future share the same ます form. Check the time word.
