Pattern

  • 動詞ます形(語幹)+そうにない/そうもない verb stem + そうにない (やみそうにない)
  • 動詞ます形(語幹)+そうもない same meaning, slightly stronger (晴れそうもない)

Meaning and connection

As in この雨は当分やみそうにない, it says that judging from the present appearance, the chance of it happening is low. The verb takes the stem (the ます-form without ます). そうにない and そうもない mean almost the same; そうもない feels slightly stronger.

Compared with similar forms

〜なさそうだ judges “it seems not to be” from appearance, while 〜そうにない is about the prospects of something yet to happen. As the speaker's prediction, it is not as strong an assertion as 〜わけがない. Verbs of possibility or prospect are common, as in できそうにない.

Examples

  • この雨(あめ)は当分(とうぶん)やみそうにない。

Kono ame wa tōbun yamisō ni nai.

This rain doesn't look likely to stop for a while.

Judged from what you see now.

  • 仕事(しごと)が多(おお)くて、今日中(きょうじゅう)には終(お)わりそうにない。

Shigoto ga ōkute, kyōjū ni wa owarisō ni nai.

There's so much work it doesn't look like it'll be done today.

    Low chance of finishing.

Sora o miru to, kyō wa haresō mo nai.

Looking at the sky, it doesn't seem likely to clear up today.

そうもない: the same meaning, a bit stronger.

Common mistakes

  • Attach it to the verb stem: × 終わるそうにない, ○ 終わりそうにない.
  • Do not use it for something already done; it is about future prospects.
