として (toshite)
として — “as ~ (a role or status)”
Pattern
-
名詞 + として、〜noun + として (研究者として, 母として) -
名詞 + としての + 名詞noun + としての + noun (教師としての責任)
Meaning and connection
The noun before として is the role or status. 私は研究者として、この大学で働いています. The sentence after it tells what the person does from that position. No particle is needed between the noun and として.
Things and works
It also tells how something is treated or regarded: この作品は名作として、今も愛されている. Here として means “in the character of; as being.”
Modifying a noun
To modify another noun, use としての: 母としての責任 (the duty as a mother). Use として with verbs and としては to contrast with other roles.

- Do not confuse it with と (with) or として meaning “as if.” Here it means a role or status.
