Pattern

  • 動詞辞書形/た形 + ついでに dictionary / ta-form + ついでに (行くついでに, 行ったついでに)
  • 名詞 + の + ついでに noun + の + ついでに (買い物のついでに)

Meaning and connection

The first part is the main errand and the second part is something small done on the occasion. 買い物のついでに、郵便局にも寄った. A noun takes の. Both ordinary actions and movements work: 散歩のついでに.

Tense of the first verb

The dictionary form means the action is not finished yet (行くついでに), and the ta-form means it has been done (行ったついでに). Either can be used.

Notes

The second action must be convenient and minor. It is not used for something that takes great effort. It is also rude to say it about doing a favor for someone to their face.

Examples

Common mistakes

  • With a noun, don't forget の: 買い物のついでに.
  • The second action should be small. Do not use it for the main purpose of the trip.
