Pattern

A is more ~ than B:

Basic pattern

The thing you compare against goes before より. 今日は昨日より暑い: yesterday is the standard, and today is hotter. To put the stress on the larger one, B より A のほうが ~ is also common.

Comparing with an expectation

A clause can come before より to compare reality with what you expected: 思ったより, 予想より, 聞いたより. The result sentence is usually past and shows surprise.

Examples

Kyō wa kinō yori atsui desu.

    Today is hotter than yesterday.

Densha wa basu yori hayai desu.

The train is faster than the bus.

Omotta yori, kono mondai wa kantan datta.

This problem was easier than I thought.

Common mistakes

  • より goes after the thing you compare against, not the main subject: バスより電車が速い / 電車はバスより速い.
  • Do not add もっと before the adjective by habit; より already means “than”.
