Pattern

  • におい/音/味/気/感じ+がする smell / sound / taste / feeling + がする (いいにおいがする)
  • 形容詞+名詞+がする adjective + noun + がする (変な味がする)

Structure

The sense word comes first with が: においがする, 音がする, 味がする. Add an adjective in front to describe it: いいにおいがする, 変な味がする.

What it says

You use it for what reaches you without your trying: a smell drifts in, a sound is heard. A place can be marked with から: 台所からいいにおいがします (a nice smell comes from the kitchen).

Set expressions

Also common: 頭痛がする (have a headache), 寒気がする (feel chilly), 気がする (have a feeling that ~), 〜ような気がする (it seems that ~).

Examples

  • 台所(だいどころ)からいいにおいがします。

Daidokoro kara ii nioi ga shimasu.

A nice smell is coming from the kitchen.

から marks where the smell comes from.

    Casual (plain) form.

  • このお茶(ちゃ)は変(へん)な味(あじ)がする。

    This tea tastes strange.

    変な (na-adjective) modifies 味.

Common mistakes

  • Use が, not を: においがする, not においをする.
  • To say you actively smell something, use かぐ or 嗅ぐ; がする is for what reaches you naturally.
