にする (ni suru)

~にする — “decide on ~ / make it ~”

In short · にする has two main uses. With a noun it means “choose, decide on” (お茶にします). With a na-adjective or noun describing a state, it means “make it ~” (部屋をきれいにする). The one who acts chooses or changes it.

Pattern

  • 名詞 + に + する(選ぶ) 飲み物はお茶にします (I'll go with tea)
  • な形容詞語幹・名詞 + に + する(変える)/い形容詞く + する きれいにする / 小さくする

Where it comes from

The particle に marks a result of change or choice, and する means “do.” お茶にする is “settle on tea”; きれいにする is “bring it to a clean state.” An i-adjective takes く (小さくする).

When to use it

Use it for ordering or choosing (飲み物はお茶にします) and for changing the state of a room or thing (部屋をきれいにしました). It also covers i-adjectives, as in テレビの音を小さくする.

Difference from になる

~にする is a choice or change made on purpose; ~になる is a change that comes about naturally. 部屋をきれいにする (someone cleans it), 部屋がきれいになる (it becomes clean).

Examples

  • 部屋(へや)をきれいにしました。

    Heya o kirei ni shimashita.

    I made the room clean.

  • 飲(の)み物(もの)はお茶(ちゃ)にします。

    Nomimono wa ocha ni shimasu.

I'll go with tea to drink.

  • テレビの音(おと)を小(ちい)さくしてください。

Terebi no oto o chiisaku shite kudasai.

Please make the TV sound quieter.

    An i-adjective takes く, not に.

Common mistakes

  • An i-adjective takes くする, not にする. 小さいにする and 小さにする are wrong.
  • にする is for deliberate choice or change; for natural change use になる.
