Pattern

  • い形容詞(〜い → 〜く)+ する 小さい → 小さくする / 温かい → 温かくする
  • な形容詞・名詞 + に + する For comparison: きれいにする / お茶にする

Where it comes from

It joins the adverbial form of an i-adjective (~く) with する. 小さい becomes 小さく, and 小さくする means “make it small.” いい becomes よく (よくする).

When to use it

Use it to adjust volume, temperature, brightness and similar: 音を小さくしてください, スープをもう少し温かくしてください. It works both for requests and for describing your own action.

Difference from ~くなる

~くなる is a change that happens by itself; ~くする is a change that someone does on purpose. 部屋が明るくなる (it gets brighter), 部屋を明るくする (someone brightens it).

Examples

  • 音(おと)を小(ちい)さくしてください。

    Oto o chiisaku shite kudasai.

    Please turn the volume down.

  • 部屋(へや)を明(あか)るくするために、電気(でんき)をつけた。

Heya o akaruku suru tame ni, denki o tsuketa.

I turned on the light to make the room brighter.

  • スープをもう少(すこ)し温(あたた)かくしてください。

Sūpu o mō sukoshi atatakaku shite kudasai.

Please make the soup a little warmer.

Common mistakes

  • Na-adjectives and nouns take にする, not くする: きれいにする, not きれいくする.
  • いい becomes よくする, not いくする.
