Pattern

Upper limit

As in せいぜい五分しか変わらない or せいぜい十人だ, it shows the ceiling for a number or amount and judges that it is no more, and small. Like たかが, it can carry a slightly dismissive, low-expectation feeling. It pairs with しか〜ない, だけ and ぐらい.

“Do your best” and cautions

As in せいぜい頑張って, it can also mean “try as hard as you can.” But it can sound sarcastic or condescending, so do not use it to superiors. Compared with 最大で or 多くても, it is more casual and includes the speaker's judgment.

Examples

Isoide mo, seizei gofun shika kawaranai.

Even if you hurry, it'll change by five minutes at most.

    With しか〜ない: only small change.

Kono mise no kyaku wa, ōkute mo seizei jūnin da.

This shop has at most about ten customers.

An upper limit on a count.

Donna ni isoide mo, seizei juppun hayaku naru dake da.

No matter how much I hurry, it'll be ten minutes faster at best.

    With だけ: only that much.

Common mistakes

  • Do not use it for large amounts; it implies the amount is small: ×
  • せいぜい頑張って can sound sarcastic, so avoid it with superiors.
