Pattern

  • 動詞ば形 + 同じ動詞辞書形 + ほど、~ 読めば読むほど (the more you read)
  • い形容詞 ~ければ + ~い + ほど 安ければ安いほど (the cheaper it is)

Repeat the same word

Take the verb or adjective, put it in the ば-form, then repeat it in the dictionary form and add ほど. 練習すればするほど means that the degree of practice matches the degree of progress. For な-adjectives and nouns, use なら: 静かならば静かなほど.

What comes after

The second half describes a change that grows along with the first, usually with なる (上手になる, 面白くなる) or a verb showing a trend (売れる). It is a natural result, not a simple one-time event.

Examples

  • 練習(れんしゅう)すればするほど上手(じょうず)になります。

Renshū sureba suru hodo jōzu ni narimasu.

The more you practice, the better you get.

  • この本(ほん)は読(よ)めば読(よ)むほど面白(おもしろ)くなる。

Kono hon wa yomeba yomu hodo omoshiroku naru.

The more you read this book, the more interesting it becomes.

  • 値段(ねだん)は安(やす)ければ安(やす)いほど売(う)れる。

Nedan wa yasukereba yasui hodo ureru.

The cheaper the price, the more it sells.

Common mistakes

  • Repeat the same word. The first part is ば-form, the second part is the dictionary form + ほど.
  • Do not use it for one-time actions; it describes a degree that changes continuously.
