Pattern

  • 動詞て形/い形容詞くて/名詞・な形容詞で + も + 構わない te-form / い-adj くて / noun, な-adj で + も + 構わない
  • 〜ても構いません Polite: 〜ても構いません (座っても構いません)

Meaning and connection

構う means “to mind, to care.” 構わない is “it doesn't matter.” With ても, the whole phrase means “even if ~, it doesn't matter.” 座っても構いません sounds like “you may sit, I don't mind.”

Giving permission

It is a softer, more polite alternative to ~てもいいです. It often appears in notices and in replies to a request: ここで写真を撮っても構いません (photos are allowed here).

Accepting a condition

The speaker can also say that a less ideal situation is acceptable: 少し遅れても構いませんので、必ず来てください. Be careful: with a negative (~なくても構わない), it means “it is not necessary to ~.”

Examples

  • ここに座(すわ)っても構(かま)いません。

    Koko ni suwatte mo kamaimasen.

I don't mind if you sit here.

  • 少(すこ)し遅(おく)れても構(かま)いませんので、必(かなら)ず来(き)てください。

Sukoshi okurete mo kamaimasen node, kanarazu kite kudasai.

I don't mind if you're a little late, so please be sure to come.

  • 写真(しゃしん)はこの部屋(へや)で撮(と)っても構(かま)いません。

Shashin wa kono heya de totte mo kamaimasen.

It's fine to take photos in this room.

Common mistakes

  • In a question, ~ても構いませんか asks for permission politely. Answer with はい、構いません or どうぞ.
  • Do not confuse ~てもかまわない (permission) with ~なくてもかまわない (not necessary).
