Pattern

  • 動詞ます形の語幹+すぎる verb stem (without ます) + すぎる (食べすぎる)
  • い形容詞(語幹)/な形容詞(語幹)+すぎる adjective without い / な + すぎる (高すぎる, 静かすぎる)

Connection

For verbs, drop ます: 食べます → 食べすぎる. For い-adjectives, drop い: 高い → 高すぎる. For な-adjectives, drop な: 静か → 静かすぎる. Irregular: いい → よすぎる, ない → なさすぎる.

Nuance

すぎる means the amount or degree is more than it should be, so it is normally negative: 高すぎます (too expensive to buy). It does not simply mean ‘very’; for that use とても.

Conjugation

すぎる behaves like a verb: past 食べすぎた, polite 食べすぎます, negative 食べすぎない. In the sentence 食べすぎました the speaker feels they overate.

Examples

  • 昨日(きのう)食(た)べすぎました。

    Kinō tabesugimashita.

    I ate too much yesterday.

    食べます → 食べ + すぎました.

  • このかばんは高(たか)すぎます。

    Kono kaban wa takasugimasu.

    This bag is too expensive.

    高い drops い: 高 + すぎます.

  • 今日(きょう)は暑(あつ)すぎます。

    Kyō wa atsusugimasu.

    Today is too hot.

    暑い drops い: 暑 + すぎます.

Common mistakes

  • Don't keep the ます or い: say 食べすぎる, 高すぎる, not 食べますすぎる, 高いすぎる.
  • すぎる means ‘too much’ (negative). For plain ‘very’, use とても.
