というのは (to iu nowa)

というのは — “the reason is ~ / ~ means …”

In short · というのは has two uses. It picks up what was just said and explains the reason (“the reason is that ~”), and it introduces the meaning or definition of a word (“~ means …”). In both cases it follows the topic.

Pattern

  • 〜というのは、〜からだ/〜からです …というのは、…からだ: the reason is that …
  • 名詞 + というのは、〜のことだ noun + というのは、…のことだ: X means …

Giving a reason

After mentioning a fact, you add why it happened. 遅れたというのは、事故があったからです. The second half always ends with からだ / からです / ためだ. The reason is the point of the sentence.

Defining a word

Put the word in front, then explain it with ~のことだ. 「締め切り」というのは、物事を終える最後の期限のことだ. This is common in explanations and textbooks.

Notes

In speech, というのは is often shortened to ってのは or とは. In the reason use, the speaker is explaining something already known to both people, not stating a new fact.

Examples

  • 遅(おく)れたというのは、事故(じこ)があったからです。

Okureta to iu nowa, jiko ga atta kara desu.

The reason I was late is that there was an accident.

  • 会(かい)を欠席(けっせき)したというのは、体調(たいちょう)が悪(わる)かったからだ。

Kai o kesseki shita to iu nowa, taichō ga warukatta kara da.

The reason I missed the meeting is that I wasn't feeling well.

  • 「締(し)め切(き)り」というのは、物事(ものごと)を終(お)える最後(さいご)の期限(きげん)のことだ。

Shimekiri to iu nowa, monogoto o oeru saigo no kigen no koto da.

A deadline means the final time limit for finishing something.

Common mistakes

  • In the reason use, end the sentence with からだ / からです. Without it the meaning is unclear.
  • To define a word, use ~のことだ or ~という意味だ, not just a noun.
