Pattern

  • 名詞 + とか + 名詞 + とか noun + とか + noun + とか (パンとか卵とか)
  • 普通形 + とか + 普通形 + とか verbs and adjectives in plain form can also be listed

How it works

Put とか after each example. The last とか is often kept, as in 掃除とか洗濯とかをします, and a particle such as を, に or が follows it. Two or three examples are typical.

Tone

It is casual and a bit vague, which is useful when you do not want to list everything. In formal writing, use ~や~など or ~や~、といった instead. Unlike ~も~も or ~と~, it does not claim the list is complete.

Examples

  • 週末(しゅうまつ)は掃除(そうじ)とか洗濯(せんたく)とかをします。

Shūmatsu wa sōji toka sentaku toka o shimasu.

On weekends I do things like cleaning and laundry.

  • 朝(あさ)はパンとか卵(たまご)とかを食(た)べます。

Asa wa pan toka tamago toka o tabemasu.

In the morning I eat things like bread and eggs.

  • 休(やす)みの日(ひ)は買(か)い物(もの)とか映画(えいが)とかに行(い)く。

Yasumi no hi wa kaimono toka eiga toka ni iku.

On my days off I go to places like the shops or the movies.

Common mistakes

  • It is casual. In formal writing, use ~や~など.
  • Put the particle after the last とか: 掃除とか洗濯とかを, not 掃除とか洗濯をとか.
