Pattern

  • 動詞辞書形 + 予定だ/予定です dictionary form + 予定だ (帰る予定です)
  • 名詞 + の + 予定だ noun + の + 予定: 来週の予定 (next week's schedule)

Plans that are already fixed

予定 is for something decided, not just hoped for. 来月帰る予定です says that your return next month is already planned. A time expression is usually included. It can also describe other people and things: 会議は三時に始まる予定だ.

Compared with つもり

~つもりだ expresses the speaker's own intention. ~予定だ stresses an arrangement or schedule, which may involve other people, so it is the natural choice for timetables and business plans.

Examples

Common mistakes

  • Use the dictionary form: 帰る予定, not 帰った予定 or 帰ている予定.
  • Do not use it for vague wishes. For something not yet decided, use ~たい or ~と思う.
