Pattern

  • 動詞辞書形+のが下手だ dictionary form + のが下手だ (歌うのが下手)
  • 名詞+が下手だ noun + が下手だ (歌が下手)

Structure

Put the verb in the dictionary form, add の to make it a noun phrase, then が下手です: 泳ぐのが下手です. The thing you are weak at is marked with が, not を.

When to use it

Talk about your own weakness or someone else's. For other people it can sound blunt, so it is used mostly about yourself or in plain description.

Opposite

The opposite is ~のが上手です (good at ~ing). Both are な-adjectives, so the past is 下手でした.

Examples

  • 私(わたし)は歌(うた)うのが下手(へた)です。

Watashi wa utau no ga heta desu.

    I am bad at singing.

    歌う (dictionary form) + の.

  • 私(わたし)は絵(え)をかくのが下手(へた)です。

Otōto wa oyogu no ga heta desu.

Common mistakes

  • Use が, not を, before 下手: 歌うのが下手です.
  • The verb before の must be in the dictionary (plain) form, not the ます form.
