Pattern

場合ではない: the standard, more formal form

Meaning and connection

場合 means “situation, occasion.” ~ている場合じゃない says that this situation is not one for the ongoing action. Use the te-iru form of the verb:

When to use it

It comes out when the speaker feels hurry or danger: a deadline is close, something has gone wrong. It is often said to oneself or to a close person to say “stop that and act.”

Register

じゃない is conversational; ではない is the standard written form. Because it is blunt, it is not suited to criticizing superiors.

Examples

    Waratte iru baai janai.

This is no time for laughing.

Shimekiri ga chikai. Nonbiri shite iru baai janai.

The deadline is near. This is no time to be taking it easy.

Konna tokoro de mayotte iru baai janai, hayaku ikō.

This is no time to be hesitating in a place like this; let's hurry.

Common mistakes

  • Use the ている form. The dictionary form (笑う場合じゃない) changes the meaning.
  • It is blunt. Avoid it toward superiors.
