続(つづ)ける (tsuzukeru)
~続ける — keep on ~ing
Pattern
-
動詞ます形(語幹) + 続けるverb stem + 続ける (歩く → 歩き続ける)
How to build it
Take the ます-form, drop ます and add 続ける: 歩きます → 歩き続ける, 泣きます → 泣き続ける. For する verbs, add it to the noun part: 努力する → 努力し続ける. 続ける itself conjugates like a normal verb (続けたい, 続けました).
Compared with ~ている
~ている shows a state or action in progress. ~続ける stresses that the action goes on for a long time, often longer than expected, and without a break. It is mainly used with verbs that can continue, such as 歩く, 泣く, 待つ and 話す.
Examples
-

Common mistakes
- Use the stem, not the dictionary form: 歩き続ける, not 歩く続ける.
- It does not fit verbs that happen in an instant, such as 死ぬ or 着く.
