Pattern

  • ぜひ + 〜たい/〜てみたい ぜひ + ~たい: I really want to ~
  • ぜひ + 〜てください ぜひ + ~てください: please do ~ by all means

Strong wish or invitation

With ~たい, ぜひ shows how much you want to do something. With ~てください, it turns an invitation or a suggestion into a warm, strong one, as in ぜひ遊びに来てください. It is often used for hospitality.

What it cannot do

ぜひ always goes with a wish, an invitation or a request. It is not used for plain facts (ぜひ行きました is wrong) or for orders. For must-do duties, use 必ず.

Examples

  • ぜひ私(わたし)の国(くに)へ遊(あそ)びに来(き)てください。

Zehi watashi no kuni e asobi ni kite kudasai.

By all means, please come visit my country.

Kono ryōri wa oishii no de, zehi tabete kudasai.

This dish is delicious, so please do try it by all means.

Common mistakes

  • Do not use it with plain statements or in the negative: ぜひ行きませんでした is wrong.
  • It is not for orders or duties. For “must”, use 必ず or ~なければならない.
