Pattern

  • 動詞て形+みる Verb te-form + みる (食べてみる)
  • 〜てみてもいいですか ~てみてもいいですか (May I try ~?)

How to use it

For food, clothes, new methods, or anything where you want to see how it turns out. Also common when asking: 試着してみる, 聞いてみる.

Where it does not fit

It cannot be used for events that happen by themselves or unconscious actions (× 雨が降ってみる). As an auxiliary, みる is normally written in kana.

Examples

  • 新(あたら)しいレストランで食(た)べてみます。

    Atarashii resutoran de tabete mimasu.

I'll try eating at the new restaurant.

  • この赤(あか)いくつをはいてみてもいいですか。

Kono akai kutsu o haite mite mo ii desu ka.

May I try on these red shoes?

  • 難(むずか)しそうだけど、一度(いちど)自分(じぶん)で作(つく)ってみます。

Muzukashisō da kedo, ichido jibun de tsukutte mimasu.

It looks hard, but I'll try making it myself once.

Common mistakes

  • Not for natural events or involuntary actions.
  • Write it in kana (みる), not the kanji 見る.
